The first trailer for Straight Outta Compton, the biopic of rap group NWA, is finally here after years in development.

It begins with footage of hip hop legends and NWA originals Dr Dre. and Ice Cube driving around their old Californian neighborhood in the present day. Compton was once considered the most dangerous place in America, and made the headlines recently when Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, CEO of Death Row Records, was charged with the murder of a man on the set of a promotional shoot for the film.

Straight Outta Compton, directed by F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job remake, A Man Apart, Set It Off) and produced by members of NWA, charts the rise and fall of the controversial and influential collective. The sons of NWA were courted to play young versions of the group, with O’Shea Jackson Jr. appearing as his father Ice Cube.

NWA members had a famously volatile history with censorship, the law, and eventually themselves. Credited with inventing gangsta rap, they reported on the reality of the violent world around them, with their debut album receiving one of the first ‘Parental Advisory’ labels. Thier acrimonious split in the Nineties resulted in gangland feuds and threats, and was only put to bed after the death of founder Easy-E, who tragically succumbed to Aids at 31. The trailer points to an equally turbulent film.
